Bible Verses for Starting Over
Whatever ended — a job, a marriage, a season of faith, a version of yourself — the Bible is full of starting-over stories. Abraham at 75. Moses at 80. Peter after the rooster crowed. None of them were finished when they thought they were. These twelve passages are for the morning after.
2 Corinthians 5:17
Therefore if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation. The old things have passed away. Behold, all things have become new.
Not will be made new. Have become new. The new starts the moment Christ has you, not after you have cleaned yourself up.
Isaiah 43:18-19
Do not remember the former things, and do not consider the things of old. Behold, I will do a new thing. It springs out now. Do you not know it? I will even make a way in the wilderness, and rivers in the desert.
It springs out now. Not eventually. Now.
Lamentations 3:22-23
It is because of Yahweh's loving kindnesses that we are not consumed, because his compassion does not fail. They are new every morning. Great is your faithfulness.
Every morning. Yesterday's failure does not get a vote in today's mercy.
Philippians 3:13-14
But one thing I do. Forgetting the things which are behind, and stretching forward to the things which are before, I press on toward the goal for the prize of the high calling of God in Christ Jesus.
Paul had plenty behind him to be ashamed of. He chose to stretch forward. The choice is the thing.
Joel 2:25
I will restore to you the years that the swarming locust has eaten, the great locust, the grasshopper, and the caterpillar, my great army, which I sent among you.
What feels like wasted years are not outside His ability to restore.
Ezekiel 36:26
I will also give you a new heart, and I will put a new spirit within you. I will take away the stony heart out of your flesh, and I will give you a heart of flesh.
He gives a new heart, not just a new circumstance. Starting over is not just changing your address.
Isaiah 40:31
but those who wait for Yahweh will renew their strength. They will mount up with wings like eagles. They will run, and not be weary. They will walk, and not faint.
Renewed strength comes from waiting on Him — not from white-knuckled effort.
Jeremiah 29:11
For I know the thoughts that I think toward you, says Yahweh, thoughts of peace, and not of evil, to give you hope and a future.
A future. He has one for you, even when you are starting from less than you wanted.
Romans 8:28
We know that all things work together for good for those who love God, to those who are called according to his purpose.
All things — including the ending that broke your heart. He is at work in it.
Proverbs 24:16
for a righteous man falls seven times, and rises up again;
The defining mark of a righteous person is not that they did not fall. It is that they got up.
Psalm 51:10
Create in me a clean heart, O God. Renew a right spirit within me.
David's prayer after his worst chapter. There was still a create in me available to him. There is for you.
John 8:11
She said, No one, Lord. Jesus said, Neither do I condemn you. Go your way. From now on, sin no more.
From now on. The future starts at the next breath, not at the end of the punishment you think you deserve.
A prayer
Father, I am not where I thought I would be. I bring You what is left and I ask You to make something new. Give me a new heart, not just a new chapter. Restore the years the locusts ate. I will take one step today. Walk with me. Amen.
